Two men were rescued in rough seas off North Head when their boat capsized.

Just after 1.00pm yesterday (Sunday, 07 August) emergency services received a report of two men in the water after their boat had overturned in rough seas off North Head, Manly.

The two men, aged 43 and 54, were in a small vessel described as a ‘dinghy’ that was travelling offshore from North Head when the sea became rougher. As the wave height increased the boat took on water. Before the boat capsized, one of the men set off two emergency flares to attract attention.

It is understood the men, who were both wearing life jackets, jumped into the water before the boat overturned to avoid being struck or trapped by the hull. They were in the water around 5-10 minutes before being picked up by a charter vessel that had been nearby and responded to the distress flares.

A number of emergency responders were tasked to the scene, including a Surf Life Saving NSW Manly Lifeguard on a jet-ski, the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, the NSW Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter, NSW Ambulance paramedics, NSW Police Marine Area Command and Marine Rescue NSW.

The men were collected from the charter vessel and returned to Manly Wharf by Marine Rescue NSW and water police. The men, who were not seriously hurt in the incident, were assessed by paramedics at Manly Wharf. One of the men was taken to hospital for further assessment and observation.

The men’s boat was salvaged today (Monday, 08 August) by water police and towed to Neutral Bay.

As the warmer months approach, Marine Rescue NSW is urging boaters to follow the safety advice and wear a life jacket, check the weather conditions before heading out and to log on with their local Marine Rescue base, so they can be quickly located in an emergency.
