Although it's not bike-specific, the Taboche excels on the trails

While the Berghaus Taboche wasn’t designed for bike use, the cut is so good that you don’t feel like you’re having to make any compromises when wearing it cycling.

The articulated shape of the cut allows complete freedom of arm movement, so even when you stretch for maximum reach the body of the jacket doesn’t shift at all.

The jacket uses a combination of materials – in this case, Gore-Tex Infinium – to provide windproof insulation, water-resistant protection where you need it, and a more breathable woven fabric where heat needs to escape.

This is combined with double-weave panels under the arms and down the sides that maximise airflow.

In keeping with other jackets I’ve tested that use Gore-Tex Infinium, the Taboche performs exceptionally well; you stay warm when you need to but don’t overheat when things warm up.

If you do start to get warm, there’s a double zip to open and close the jacket from the base for quick venting, and a popper at the base so you can vent without any flapping as you ride. There’s also a zipped chest pocket and all the zip pulls are generous enough for easy use with gloved hands.

The hood goes over a helmet and cinches in so it doesn’t interfere with peripheral vision. I like the height of the collar when the hood is up too – it’s high enough to be reassuringly protective without feeling stifled. Plus, it has the all-important zip garage to prevent chin-chafe.

That articulated shape and slim cut – meaning it can be combined with a waterproof outer shell in the very worst conditions – make this all-rounder work so well on a bike, it’s a versatile, high performance investment.

So, if you’re looking for one soft-shell that will work for outdoor activities off the bike but not cramp your style on it then the Taboche is one to try.
